Moreover, the ultimate purpose of John’s life was to give all glory to Jesus. A disciple of the Savior today cannot choose a better motto for his life than John expressed, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). Jesus gave the measure of the Forerunner’s stature when He declared,, “Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist” (Luke 7:28; cf. Matt. 11:11). The reason for presenting this book as a profile of John the Baptist is that no comprehensive study of the great prophet, relying upon the Gospels as truthful history, has been published in recent years. A Scriptural appraisal of the questions raised in our time regarding the source of John’s teachings and baptism is needed.
